BMW unveils i8 Concept Spyder

The German automaker BMW has unveiled a few days ago the i8 Concept Spyder which is basically the convertible version of the 2011 coupe. The car is riding on a shortened wheelbase and comes with laser headlights, a rakish widescreen that has an integrated spoiler, along with a semi-transparent hood. At the back of the car we notice the U-shaped taillights, the “three-dimensional air outlets” and the rear diffuser.

Inside the cabin it has a carbon fiber trim, leather upholstery and piano black accents. Other than that, it packs a three-dimensional iDrive display as well as a digital instrument cluster.

At the heart of the BMW i8 Concept Spyder is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that has a 3-cylinder gasoline engine which can develop 220 hp (223 PS / 164 kW) and an electric motor that generates 129 hp (131 PS / 96 kW). The front wheels of the concept are powered by the electric motor, while the gasoline engine takes care of the rear wheels. This means that the car has an AWD system and offers a combined output of 349 hp (354 PS / 260 kW). The car is capable of doing the 0-62 mph sprint in just five seconds, en route to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The car can be driven on electric mode for up to 19 miles (30 km), allowing the car to return 78.4 mpg (94.1 mpg UK or 3 liters / 100 km).
